I go to Eastside every Saturday morning. Since I joined I have learned so many new things about myself, about the world and I believe I have an exciting future ahead of me. I enjoy team activities and I feel more confident about taking exams and speaking to an audience. We learn how to concentrate and we are encouraged to be creative. I feel like I’m doing better in school now.
Daniel, Year 7 Young Leader
My son joined Eastside in January. He didn’t want to start but since the second week he can’t wait to get there on a Saturday morning. By the end of the Spring Term his teacher reported that his behaviour and effort in the classroom has improved so much, he’s like a different child. He’s even doing better at home – still really chatty though!
Parent of Year 4 Young Leader
EYLA came to my school to run leadership classes when I was in Year 8. At the time I wasn’t doing very well. They saw my potential and helped me to see that I was capable of so much more. I joined the programme and managed to get a bursary place in the 6th form at a boarding school. EYLA continued to support me throughout and I have now graduated from university, gained a masters and I’m working in the city. I am now in a position to give back by mentoring other young leaders.
David - Alumni
I would highly recommend mentoring at EYLA. Both my mentee and I widened our horizons - we read and discussed books and news articles and visited the Supreme Court. We learnt a lot and had fun in the process. If you can commit the time and enthusiasm you will find it rewarding and educational. It’s exciting and a privilege to play a part in a young person’s success.
Mentor – In School Programme
The boys who took part in the programme really enjoyed the sessions and the lessons learnt over the course began to impact their attitudes and behaviour both in and out of the classroom. The sessions covered a range of topics but always came back to positive learning behaviour and ambitious attitudes, a philosophy shared with the school. Since concluding the boys have maintained improved attitudes towards learning and we have developed our own programme to maintain the achievements made.
Teacher – In-School Programme
Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy is a remarkable organisation that is transforming lives. It has been a privilege to watch its growth over the course of the last eleven years and I have nothing but admiration for Ray, Anne and all the EYLA team for the work they do. At its heart is a belief that it is enabling young people to be in charge of their own futures. I have seen first-hand the difference that EYLA has made and what is particularly impressive is that EYLA alumni recognise they have a responsibility to make a difference.
