Creating the educational opportunity of a lifetime

‘Eastside’s Scholars’ represents an exciting and far-reaching development from Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy. This new programme builds on our track record of achieving extraordinary results in turning around the educational performance of black boys over the last decade.

The programme is designed to access the country’s top boarding Schools (and some independent day schools) to a generation of boys who have the talent but lack opportunity, support structure and finance.

Our mission is to identify academically able boys, and give them the preparation and support to succeed at the entrance examination, and thereafter through their experience as a boarder at a leading school. As importantly, we work with the parents and families of participating boys, to help them understand and engage with both the

preparation phase and the experience of boarding following exam success.

How we work and who can apply
Our input and involvement develops through a number of stages:

Recruitment
We run a competitive process to create a ‘target pool’ of boys from which to select suitable candidates.

Assessment
Boys from the target pool may or may not have demonstrated the characteristics that are routinely recognised as the predictors of success in later life. Our assessment process will establish potential for success, and identify impediments to realising it.

Preparation
We deliver this through intensive tutorial sessions (Masterclasses), working through a multi-subject

curriculum, designed for boys, towards entrance exams. These are run after school, on Saturdays and during school holidays. Children can start from Year 5 through to year 10 depending on the academic year of entrance i.e. Year 7, 9 or 12. The preparation process will also include visits to schools.

Partnership

Schools, community learning centres and parents can refer a child to the programme. Parents will be means tested to ensure that their child is eligible for a full bursary.

What about girls?
Whilst the programme addresses the learning needs and styles of boys we are willing to consider girls who meet the criteria.
